Hi, my name is Gretel Garcia! I am a second-year Master of Public Health (MPH) student in Epidemiology at the University of Florida. I graduated from UF in May, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in health science through the combined degree program. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and come from a big Cuban family.
My academic and research interests include health disparities, minority populations, language barriers in healthcare, and their impact on health outcomes. I am particularly interested in how structural and communication barriers affect access to care and participation in preventive and clinical health services.

I currently work as a medical assistant at a dermatology clinic, volunteer as a Spanish translator at the Equal Access Clinic, and intern with the UF Cancer Institute. These experiences span both clinical and community settings and have shaped my interest in public health, health equity, and reducing barriers to care, especially for underserved and Spanish-speaking populations.

Outside of my academic and professional work, I enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures, spending time with friends and family, going to the beach, reading, and watching movies and TV shows.
